金文是商周时期（以周最为盛行）的文字，因传世的大多是青铜器铭文，故名金文。金文的书体，一般称为大篆或籀书，也有称为古籀的。
 

在周朝分封格局的社会文化背景下，文字的样式也呈多样性。《中国书法简史》（王镛主编）载：“秦系是区别于其他各系的一个特殊而独立的系统，在书法上表现出对西周正统的继承。……秦系的文字在汉字发展史上占有至关重要的地位”；“（秦系风格）不是各偏旁的简单并置、堆砌，也不是刀尺裁度出来的几何图案，而是充满了生命情味的有机体。这样的有机结构是西周以前的书法所不具备的，其后的小篆的偏旁组合更是难以为继了。”
 

本书遴选宝鸡一代秦发祥地得到金文的拓迹50余种，放大整理成10帖，以方便读者使用。这些文字虽风格各异、天趣迥然，但都蕴含着正大堂皇之气，对于当今书法、文字研究者及广大爱好者，均不失为必备的临习鉴赏资料。
